Welcome

At New Farm State School library we aim to create a welcoming environment that supports and encourages student learning and discovery, while promoting a love of reading. Our library includes a range of children's literature including fiction and non-fiction for the upper and lower school. The library also supports school staff with teaching and curriculum resources. Staff and students can access the school library catalogue to search for books in the library.

Opening Hours

The library is open from 8:30am – 3.30pm Monday to Thursday.

Students have access to the library at designated lunch times for student borrowing, reading, quiet games and colouring.

Borrowing

Every class has a weekly library time with their teacher when they can borrow and return books. Students in Prep borrow one book and students in Years 1-6 may borrow two books at any one time. Students may return and borrow independently as often as they wish before school from 8:30am, during break times and after school. Students who have research queries and need assistance with book selections are able to ask library staff.

eBooks Digital Library

New Farm State School students and teachers can now access the EQ Digital Library containing 28000 eBooks, audio books and streaming videos to support student learning and reading for enjoyment. To login, student MIS ID only is  required.

Book Club

At New Farm State School we have two book clubs, Scholastic and Red Gum Book Club. The school receives a commission on all purchases which go towards purchasing new books and resources for the school.

Events

Throughout the year, local community, national and international events are celebrated in the library via book displays, activities and guest readers visiting the library.

Premiers Reading Challenge

New Farm State School students can participate in the Premiers reading challenge. Students are encouraged to join the challenge and record the books they read. Students are registered by the school so all they need to do is pick up a form from the library and start reading!

CBCA - Book Week 2020

Book Week is celebrated annually with a dress up day, fun activities in the library and student and teacher parade.

The 2020 Children's Book Council of Australia (CBCA) shortlist has been released for the Book of the year in several categories. Check out the shortlisted books in the older and younger readers, early childhood, the picture book of the year, the Eve Pownall award and the CBCA award for new illustrator. The winner of each category will be announced in Book Week in Term 4 October 17-23.

During Book Week we have an author visit the school and talk to all year levels.

In 2020 we had Aleesah Darlison speak to the students about her 'League of Llama series, The Golden Llama'. Students from Prep to Year 6 enjoyed her fun and engaging sessions involving readings, quizzes, code breaking and drawing their own llama!
