At New Farm, we want your child the be as successful as possible at school and we know that success in school is not just about reading and maths. It is also about knowing how to learn and how to get along with others which is why we use Second Stepprogram in every classroom to teach these critical skills.
This program was researched and selected by our 2021 Wellbeing Committee, as part of our quadrennial school improvement agenda. The Second Step program will work with our existing Positive Behaviour for Learning Framework.
The Second Step program teaches skills in the following areas:
- Skills for Learning – skills to help you learn.
- Empathy –identifying and understanding your own and others' feelings.
- Emotion Management – learning specific skills for calming down when experiencing strong feelings.
- Problem Solving – learning processes for solving problems with others in a positive way.
Throughout the year, your child will be learning a lot and your class teacher will be sharing Home Links with you along the way. These Home Links are simple, fun activities for you and your child to complete together. It's a great way for you to understand what your child is learning and for your child to show you what he or she knows.
